Pre-Construction Project Timeline Graphic

We are in the final design stages of this project and construction will begin as soon as late July 2022 and is scheduled to last 2-3 months. Community members should expect pre-construction notices in the form of mailers and signage in the coming weeks to indicate that construction will begin. Thank you for your patience as we prepare for this work.

Project Overview

In 2017, the Seattle Department of Transportation added a two-way protected bike lane along the east side of Gilman Ave W, increasing safety and connectivity. Now, SDOT will improve the bus stops along the route to ensure they are accessible and reduce bicycle-transit conflicts. Here are the planned changes:

  • Raise the protected bike lane at bus stops and add accessible boarding islands in the buffer space. This allows passengers to get on and off the bus safely and comfortably.
  • Add marked crosswalks across Gilman at W Fort St, W Jameson St, W Elmore St, and W Emerson P. Bus stops will be relocated slightly so that buses do not block the new crosswalks while they are stopped.
  • Add an asphalt sidewalk on the east side of Gilman Ave W from W Jameson St to W Emerson Pl. Currently, this area is just grass with a narrow dirt path worn by use. \
  • Add or improve curb ramps on Gilman at Fort/28th, Williams, Jameson/27th, 26th, Elmore/25th, 24th, and Emerson/Thurman. These new ADA ramps will ensure that everyone can use the sidewalks to travel along Gilman Ave W.

The raised bike lanes at bus stops will be similar to the new bike lanes on NE 65th St
