1st Ave S & Georgetown ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) Project

What's happening now?

This ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) project, with its primary focus on upgrading traffic signals, involves construction at a select number of intersections on both S Michigan St (from East Marginal Way S east to the I-5 on-ramp at Bailey & Carleton) and on 1st Ave S (between S Spokane St and East Marginal Way S).

Currently, crews are working at intersections on both S Michigan St and 1st Ave S, with particular emphasis on finishing the construction on S Michigan St as soon as possible. The goal is to get out of the way for a separate project that will repave S Michigan St, with that work slated to begin August 1.

Much of their current ITS work is being done at night to minimize the impacts to traffic on S Michigan St.

The paving project mentioned above will repave S Michigan St from 4th Ave S to Corson Ave S, as well as on Corson from Michigan to S Orcas St, and on S Bailey St from Corson to Carleton Ave S. Information about the paving project can be found at the Georgetown Arterial Paving Project page.

Project Overview

We use a variety of technologies to improve multi-modal travel across the city, including upgraded traffic signals. These technologies are known as Intelligent Transportation Systems, or ITS. ITS plays a key role in a safe, efficient, and innovative transportation system that works for all travelers.

Specifically, this project will make traffic signal modifications along 1st Ave S between S Spokane St and East Marginal Way at:

  • S Spokane St
  • S Hudson St
  • S Dawson St
  • S Lucile St
  • East Marginal Way

In the Georgetown area, we will make similar signal modifications at:

  • E Marginal Way & S Michigan St
  • 4th Ave S & S Michigan St
  • 6th Ave S & S Michigan St
  • Corson Ave S & S Michigan St
  • Carleton Ave S & S Bailey St (location of I-5 on-ramp)

At some of these locations, we'll replace the existing curb ramps and short sidewalk sections. We'll also install 4 additional traffic cameras to provide real time traffic information to benefit both the public and SDOT.

Construction is scheduled to start on May 15 and take 4 to 5 months to complete. Information about the order in which the work will be completed will be posted soon.

Most construction will occur during the regular work week, but some weekend work is expected.

Construction of new curb ramps and sidewalk segments will take a week or more at each location and will require short-term pedestrian detours. We'll most likely have police officers assisting with traffic control when crews are actively working in the intersections. In addition, some short-term lane closures are likely.

The construction contract amount is $1.8 million, with funding from the Federal Highway Administration, supplemented with a local match.
