25th Ave NE Paving Project
Updated: July 29, 2019
Construction on 25th Ave NE is now complete!
Project Overview
25th Ave NE connects the Ravenna and Roosevelt neighborhoods to many local retail establishments and services. It is also a transit route with service connecting northeast Seattle to the U District, Link light rail, and downtown Seattle.
Each year, we pave arterial streets in poor condition to make them safer, smoother, and to extend their useful life. We prioritize paving projects based on pavement condition, traffic volume, geographic equity, cost, and opportunities for grants or coordination with other projects in the area. Paving streets also creates opportunities to improve street safety and move people and goods more efficiently in a growing Seattle.

Project Description
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) repaved approximately 1.25 miles of 25th Ave NE between Montlake Boulevard NE and NE 65th St (see map below). Repaving makes the street more comfortable to drive on and extends its useful life. This maintenance work does not preclude us from returning later to make additional improvements to 25th Ave NE.
As part of the repaving, crews used a construction technique called "mill and overlay" to grind off the top two inches of existing road surface, made needed repairs to the road base below, and then repaved with new asphalt and repainted the lane striping. This work is expected to extend the life of the street for another 10-12 years and provides a smoother driving experience.
The project has:
- Upgraded curb ramps: In select locations, we upgraded curb ramps in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
- Made minor drainage system upgrades: These upgrades help remove stormwater from the road
- Replaced traffic sensors: These sensors, also known as "traffic detention loops" help control the traffic signals at intersections
- Made bus stop improvements: We worked with King County Metro to improve the sidewalk at several bus stops and install a new shelter at NE Blakely St
