33rd Ave W Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge
Updated February 8, 2022
What's Happening Now?
We have selected Alternative 3: Replacement of the existing bridge - angled alignment, to move forward into 60% design. This concept was selected based on technical and cost analyses, as well as a review of the public input we received in 2020 and 2021. Thanks to all those who completed our survey and have given us feedback. The selected option aligned with community priorities of widening the pathway, increasing safety and accessibility, and a shorter length of construction (for replacement). The bridge will be ADA complaint. Please see concept details below.
Alternative 3: Replacement of existing bridge - angled alignment
This concept includes:
- Removing and replacing existing structure
- Installing a new superstructure and deck
- Building new north and south abutments
- Building a new retaining wall on the south approach
- Widening the bridge from 6 feet to 14 feet
Considerations:
- Realignment of the bridge is within the City right-of-way
- Higher up-front cost, lower long-term costs
- ADA compliant

What's next?
We expect 60% design to be complete by Fall 2022.
As part of the next phase of our design work, we'll be evaluating both a concrete design as well as a metal/steel design. We will share the preferred material design in our 60% design listserv update later this year. This project is only funded up to 60% design through the Levy to Move Seattle. Final design and construction are not currently funded.

Project overview
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is evaluating the feasibility and options to rehabilitate or to replace the 33rd Ave W Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge in Magnolia. While still safe to use, the bridge is showing signs of deterioration. This timber bridge connects people walking and biking across an active railroad corridor to Commodore Park and the Ballard Locks area. There are no plans to remove the 33rd Ave W bridge, and the bridge is still safe to use.
Project location
Located in the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle, the 33rd Ave W Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge is located near the Salmon Bay waterfront. The bridge is an important part of Seattle's biking and walking network and links Magnolia to Ballard and the Burke-Gilman Trail. The bridge crosses an active railroad corridor, which runs through the city from the Industrial District in the south to Broadview in the northwest.
Schedule
We completed 30% design in late 2021 and we're aiming to complete 60% in fall 2022.
Funding
This project is funded through 60% design. Final design and construction are currently not funded for this project.
