16.250 - Interaction with the University of Washington Police Department

This policy applies to sworn employees interacting with the University of Washington Police Department.

1. Officers Will Not Conduct Routine Patrol of the University of Washington Campus

Officers will respond on campus to reports of an emergency, crime in progress, help-the-officer or any life-safety situation.

  • Communications will dispatch a Sergeant to the scene when officers respond on campus to an emergency situation.

2. Sergeants Will Not Screen Arrests Made by the UWPD

The UWPD will screen and handle their arrests.

3. Detectives May Investigate Crimes on the UW Campus if Requested by the UWPD Chief or Their Designee

The sergeant of the follow up unit investigating the crime on campus will coordinate with a UWPD supervisor to coordinate UWPD’s response.

4. Use of Force by UWPD that Results in Death or Serious Injury Requires a Specific Response

The UWPD will investigate force used by UWPD that occurs on campus.

The Department will investigate force used by UWPD that occurs off campus.

5. The Chief of Police or Duty Captain Will Screen and Coordinate Requests by UWPD to Assist with a Civil Disturbances on the UW Campus

The screening Duty Captain will inform the Patrol Operations Bureau Chief of requests by UWPD for assistance with on-campus civil disturbances.

The president of the University will make the request.  Absent the president, the following may act for the president:

  • Provost and Executive Vice President
  • Senior Vice President for Finance and Facilities
  • Vice President and Vice Provost for Student Life
  • Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs

The Chief of the UWPD, or their designee may act with the authority of the president of the University when:

  • The president and listed officers are unavailable and there is an immediate threat of civil disorder
  • A civil disorder is in progress, and immediate action is necessary to protect persons or property from further injury or damage
