The project team created three potential design concepts for the new Rainier Community Center Play Area based on community feedback. View the proposed design options and share your input at: Survey for the Rainier Community Center Play Area Renovation.

This project will replace the existing play area and make accessibility improvements to the pathway from the park entrance. All improvements will meet accessibility and stormwater requirements. This project will update the pathways through the park to create an accessible route to the play area.

The three community outreach drop-in meetings have been completed. Information from these meetings and from www.adefuacenter.org are attached below. We heard that the play area should be fun for all ages, comfortable, and unique. We also heard many people talk about the trees; the value of the current ones and the desire to have more trees.

Location

Rainier Community Center, 4600 38th Ave S, 98118
(Play Area is behind Community Center)

Budget

Real Estate Excise Tax provides $1,780,000 for planning, design and construction.

Schedule

Planning: Spring 2023 in conjunction with the Genesee Play Area
Design: Summer 2023
Construction: 2025

Project Description

This project will replace the existing play area located next to Rainier Community Center. This will include the existing play equipment, plaza, shelter, and consideration of different layouts for these elements. Seating walls, picnic tables and other options to provide accessible seating will be studied. This project will also consider evaluating the health of existing trees and consider renovating the plantings between the parking and play area. Seattle Parks and Recreation will work with the neighborhood to create a design that will reflect the cultural aspects of the local community.

All improvements will meet accessibility (including routes to the play area) and stormwater requirements.

The play area will be closed throughout construction.
